Mandela Forum keeps growing, step by step, through targets we plan to give continuity to our daily engagement.
Following the goals we achieved, the works in progress, the road still to go. The first outcome of our engagement to promote and to spread the values that Mandela represents.
Wednedsday, September 1st 2004: begins the recyclable-waste collection (paper, plastic, cans and organic material) inside the Mandela Forum.

Monday, January 3rd 2005: we form a partnership with LILA Tuscany to establish common projects on a local level, so that LILA may have a stronger visibility in the occasion of shows and activities inside the Mandela Forum.

Thursday, April 7th 2005: in coincidence with the Queen concert, we begin the collection of Mater-Bi made containers, a higlhy biodegradable material used inside the venue to serve food and beverage during the shows. At the snack bar today you will find glasses made of Pla, or Polilattide, which is an evolution of Mater-Bi, obtained by corn starch and produced through an environmental friendly processing.

We accomplished an exhibition called “Apartheidmuseum; from apartheid to democracy, South Africa’s struggle for freedom”, a photo exhibition that opened fra Saturday 9th through Thursday 21st of April 2005, coming directly by the Johannesburg Apartheid Museum (South Africa). We also produced tha catalog of the photo exhibition, translated into Italian by the South Afrincan Embassy in Italy.

Friday, May 27th 2005: we awarded the winner of the competition announced by the Palasport Association for the Mandela Forum logos.
The winner of the competition is a young designer, Alex Weste, presented by the senior designer Beppe Chia from the “Chialab” studio.
Successively the award of the winner project, we accomplished an exhibition of the works who tooked part to the competion, opened on Saturday, June 25th 2005. The exhibition is still showing inside the venue in the corridor of the balcony.

Saturday, June 4th 2005, in coincidence of the Lenny Kravitz concert, a part of the Mandela Forum has been given the the UN to promote the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Campaign. Since then, the same thing occurs every time there is an important show inside the venue.

Sunday, June 12 2005: starts the collection of bottle plastic caps so they can be differently recycled. Being made of a harder type of plastic that the one of the bottles, they cannot go through the same processing.

Starting in June through September the Mandela Forum hostes the Movie Arenas “di Marte”, which is an activity with more than 40.000 people attending the shows. To fulfil the request that Mr. Mandela made to the Florentine Delegation who gathered in South Africa in the month of march, Palasport Association includes in the movie program, a group of film on human rights; also includes a movie review on the Italian Resistance to the nazi-fascist occupation, with a photo exhibition.

The partnership with social labour cooperatives for the cleaning inside the Mandela Forum.

We started to issue water coming from the public aqueduct for free to the public gathering for the shows at the Mandela Forum.

Monday, October 24th 2005, two screens were installed inside the Mandela Forum to project, before the beginning of each show, advertisement related to the subject of human rights, such as Giorgio Gaber’s “La Libertà”, performed by Giobbe Covatta together with the children of the village he adopted through Amref, the most important health NGO based in Africa, whose target is to aid health and social welfare of the poorest population, through out their direct involvement.

Work allotment B was finished, regarding rebuilding toilettes on the first floor and the parterre, planned within bioarchitecture, available for handicapped people.

Mandel Forum is open to the people of the city, fully integrated within the strategy of welfare through the sports, making sport actively part of social strategies and of the gathering of different generations.

On the occasion of the Human Rights Day, we opened the exhibition “The Wall of Rights”, a permanent exposition in the corridor near the main entrance. Professor Marcello Flores, promoter of the Human Rights and Humanitarian Action Master of the University of Siena, Faculty of Literature and Philosophy, Department of Science of Communication, has organized the "Wall".

The Mandela Forum renovation project provides special attention to the renewing of all the venue. The areas of intervention concern the acoustic adjustment (always so difficult), increasing the capability accomplished through a new telescopic gallery, increasing the number of toilettes by recovering the already existing ones, besides increasing the number of toilettes for handicapped people; recovering of some areas by redrawing others; upgrading trimmings by redoing almost all pavements and placing theatrical lights in the corridors adding to the ones already existing.

Mandela Forum gives hospitality inside the venue to many classrooms that don’t have an appropriate space for physical education.

On the occasion of “Freedom Day”, on April 27th 2006, day in which South Africa celebrates its first democratic election (April 27th 1994), Mandela Forum hosted the youth orchestra of the Roedean Music School in South Africa for a free entrance concert, with two guest orchestras from the Fiesole Music School and Sesto Fiorentino Music School.

The 1st of December 2006, on the occasione of the World Aids Day, we opened the second permanent exhibition "Mandela - Il ritratto di un uomo" (Contrasto, Milano 2006).

Soon the restoration of Vinicio Berti’s (Florence 1921-1991) painting, placed on the wall surrounding the Mandela Forum, will start.

Running the two snack-bars inside the Mandela Forum in partnership with a cooperative of African people.

Shortly will begin the partnership, for all the cleaning services, with a company, technologically speaking very much in the van, which uses workforces coming from the prison of Sollicciano in Florence, so to help these people to comply with alternative measures of external work.

In the next months we will show a stamp collection regarding Nelson Mandela inside the Focardi Wall in the Mandela Forum, kindly donated by Mr. Mario Masella, resident in Casa Serena in Johannesburg.

The Tuscan Region Headquarters, Office of the “Memory Day”, is willing to prepare a permanent exhibition at the Mandela Forum on the subject of the Shoah, with professor Marcello Flores as curator.
